A woman passenger put £50 worth of petrol in her then boyfriend’s car and asked the garage attendant for an IOU.

Brooke Doe was turned down because she made a previous agreement at Springfields Service Station to pay £60, which she hadn’t honoured.

Paul Wood, prosecuting, said after being turned down, Doe told the attendant she would discuss the matter with the driver, but got in the car and told him to drive away.

Mr Wood asked for compensation for the garage in Holbeach Road, Spalding.

Doe (19), of Falcon Court, Falcon Way, Bourne, was conditionally discharged for a year and ordered to pay £50 compensation and a £15 victim surcharge.

She pleaded guilty at Spalding Magistrates’ Court to making off without payment on August 23.

Solicitor Roger Lowden, mitigating, described her then boyfriend’s relationship with Doe as “abusive and controlling” and said he had willingly let her take the blame.

Mr Lowden said: “When I first met her she was extremely frightened about these proceedings.

“The first question she asked me was ‘do you think I will go to prison?’ She struggled to complete her means form this morning because she was shaking so much she just couldn’t do it.”
