Benefits totalling £5,042.81 were claimed by a man who failed to tell authorities he and his wife were working.
The sum included Jobseeker’s Allowance and Council Tax and housing benefit, Spalding magistrates heard.
Steven Allen (45), of Kenzie Drive, Sutton Bridge, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to notify a change of circumstances affecting his entitlement to benefit and was conditionally discharged for six months with an order for £50 costs.
The court heard the authorities make their own arrangements to recover sums overpaid.
Solicitor Rachel Stevens, mitigating, said Allen was made redundant in 2008 when his firm went bankrupt and later lost his house, which sold for £45,000 less than his mortgage.
When he first claimed JSA it was perfectly legitimate.
Miss Stevens said Allen was adamant he claimed benefits in his own right and didn’t know his partner’s circumstances affected his claim.
The charges relate to a period from January to June last year.
