A shoplifter was spotted stealing a £21.79 bottle of Teacher’s whisky but was already drinking it outside Sainsbury’s Spalding store before staff could detain him.

Edvard Mencinskij (23), of Hannam Boulevard, pleaded guilty to the theft on September 4 and was ordered to pay a total of £271.79 – including fines, costs and compensation – when he appeared at Spalding Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Daniel Paulson, prosecuting, said Mencinskij committed an almost identical theft three or four days earlier in Bourne.

Solicitor Daven Naghen, mitigating, said Mencinskij was very drunk at the time he committed the Spalding offence.
