A Network Rail spokesman said: "A signaller reported a fault with the Hawthorn Bank level crossing this morning.

"To protect the safety of those travelling on trains, as well as motorists and pedestrians, the barriers were kept in the 'down' position.

"This was to allow Network Rail engineers to visit the site and carry out work to resolve the issue.

"We would like to apologise for any disruption caused and thank all those affected for their patience."
