Response to the launch of our Spalding Guardian Christmas Day lunch and party appeal has been overwhelming, with many guests from last year reserving their seats early and lots of newcomers wanting to join in the fun.
The free event for elderly people and couples, who would otherwise be alone on December 25, is once again being held at the Ivo Day Centre in Spalding,
Plans got under way last week after Buckingham Emergency Food, which is based in Norfolk but sources its vegetables from Lincolnshire, got in touch with us following an interview with Radio Lincolnshire, who told the charity about our party.
Since then offers have flooded in from people who want to bake for us and supply the things which will remind guests of the home-cooked Christmas meals they used to prepare or enjoy with family.
Ninety-five-year-old Robert Wade, of Spalding, was one of the guests at last year’s party.
He said: “Having been to the event last year, I’d like to say if you are on your own on Christmas Day, then book to come along.
“I think the helpers at last year’s event went to a lot of trouble and worry, one way or another, to give us a marvellous time.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward to this year’s party.”
New volunteer Kay Johnson said: “I just thought it would be nice this year to do something for others on Christmas Day.
“I’m really looking forward to getting involved.”
Transport can be provided to the Ivo Day Centre in Albion Street, where guests will be greeted with a glass of sherry and introduced to the people they will be sat near.
There will be a three-course meal, followed by mince pies and tea or coffee.
This year, local vocalist Phil Wigger will provide some entertainment and everyone will also be invited to join in a sing-song.
And before everyone goes home we are expecting a visit from the man himself – Santa Claus.
There is still plenty of time for people to book to have a meal or get involved as a volunteer or entertainer. This year we would like to run a raffle so gift donations for this would be welcome.
