One stylist has been involved in Steffens hair salon, on and off, even longer than Jackie Ellison.
Toni Thompson started work with Steffen as a junior in 1979/80 and stayed there for three years before joining Boston College as a lecturer in hairdressing. She spent 20 years doing that and five years lecturing in computing before returning to the salon last year.
She has seen styles change over the years, from 1980s shaggy perms when the salon was filled with lamp dryers, to extremely straight styles.
Toni says more recently clients are opting for something called boho chic, a softer, more natural look, with waves in their hair and plaiting, and sometimes people choose to have their hair up and incorporate plaits into the style .
