I am researching my family tree and I wonder if any of your readers could help?
My great-grandfather, John Rodwell, married Mary Ann Wakins in 1854 and lived in the Whaplode/Holbeach area. Their daughter, Martha Rodwell, married T H Downs, who had a cycle repair shop at 42 Church Street, Holbeach.
Two of Martha’s sons were in the Spalding Fire Service, one of them, John H Downs, married Emma. A second son, Thomas Henry Downs, left the fire service and joined the army (circa 1911). Martha Downs, née Rodwell, also had a daughter named Florrie Depear and a younger son, Charles.
My grandfather, Martha’s brother, was Charles Rodwell, who married Elizabeth Buffham, both of whom were born in Whaplode.
My father was John Charles Rodwell, born in Sheffield and in WW1 was in the Machine Gun Corps, Lincolnshire. Mary Ann Watkins died in the Fleet Infirmary Workhouse in 1911.
We recently spent a week in the area and the staff at both Spalding Library and Ayscoughfee Hall were very helpful.
