AN infestation of mice, silverfish and beetles led to a Spalding takeaway being temporarily closed by health inspectors.

The pest problem, along with food contaminated with mouse droppings, was discovered by South Holland District Council food safety officers during an inspection at Downtown takeaway on Winsover Road on Tuesday.

The takeaway owner agreed to voluntarily close to treat the problem, but an hour later the business had reopened.

Council officers felt there was an imminent health risk and ordered the business to close until they were satisfied with hygiene standards.

A spokesman said: “We revisited the premises and owners had carried out significant works, engaging a professional pest control company, so we allowed them to reopen on Thursday night.

“This does not rule out further enforcement action if required.”
