Bosses explain thinking behind A17, A16 and A151 roadworks
Highways chiefs have defended the way in which they have planned works to all three of South Holland’s major roads.
The A17 is shut overnight at Cross Keys Bridge for three days a week in May and next week the A151 will also be closed overnight for resurfacing at the same time.
However, highways bosses have now said that overnight closures of the A16 between Spalding and Crowland will not take place until next month.
This is despite the fact that the work was announced to begin on May 2 - which would have also been a clash with the Sutton Bridge work.
Repairs to roundabouts in Spalding, Cowbit and Crowland will now take place between June 11 and June 30 - with bosses saying that the dates have changed due to a combination of 'contractor availability' and 'access to the road network' with a lot happening at that time.
The May dates for the A16 were still being advertised today.
In our sister title, the Spalding Guardian, we reported how businessman Mroof Choudry said doing work to several major roads together was ‘out of order’ - while Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum chairman George Scott questioned the strategy behind planning the work in this way.
A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council said: “Whilst all of these works are in the South Holland area, their diversion routes do not use the same route and carrying out the works overnight is a vital part of minimising disruption to road users, ensuring the least disruption to traffic.
“All of these are essential maintenance and will improve the road surface which is near the end of its lifespan and the county council has to strike the right balance between delivering these improvements for the benefits of road users whilst managing disruption.
“Advanced signing, including variable message signs for the Cross Keys A17 site, will be in place ahead of all closures.”
The A17 is closed overnight in Sutton Bridge for Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the rest of May. On each occasion the bridge will be in the open position and shut from 7pm until 7am the following morning.
The A151 will be resurfaced at High Road in Whaplode. That work begins on Monday, May 16, with the road shut each night from 7pm until 6am each day. That is due to end on May 28.
