Bookmark in Spalding has chosen Letters to the Midwife as its book of the week.
Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth, along with her other titles Shadows of the Workhouse, Farewell to the East End and In the Midst of Life, have touched a chord with thousands of people since their publication and, more recently, through the adaptation of Call the Midwife as a television series.
Letters to the Midwife is a wonderful collection of correspondence received by Jennifer Worth and offers a fascinating glimpse into a long-lost world.
Along with readers’ responses and personal histories, it is filled with all sorts of heart-warming gems. There are stories from other midwives, lorry drivers, a seamstress, all with tales to tell.
Containing previously unpublished material describing her time spent in Paris and some journal entries, this is also a portrait of Jennifer herself, complete with a moving introduction by her family about the woman they knew and loved.
There are also pages of photos of Jennifer, her family and some of the people she wrote about.
The book retails for £7.99 but there is a 20 per cent discount voucher in the Spalding Guardian of January 8.
