About 50 tonnes of household rubbish has been destroyed in a blaze at a waste plant in Wyberton.

It happened at a waste transfer station in Slippery Gowt Lane where firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used water hoses to put out the blaze which happened just before 3pm on Saturday.

About six fire engines were called out to the blaze which happened during a five-hour strike by members of the Fire Brigades Union over pension and retirement changes planned by the Government.

No one was injured in the blaze.
