A HOLBEACH woman is preparing to celebrate her 80th birthday by jumping out of a plane from two miles high.

Mavis Taylor, of Cecil Pywell, is hoping to raise as much money as she can by completing a tandem skydive in aid of the care home where her husband Basil (79) lives.

“My husband is a resident of Patchett Lodge in Holbeach and has been for nearly three years,” she said.

“He has alzheimers and is disabled. He has to be hoisted everywhere and it is difficult to get him showered and bathed in the facilities they have.”

Mavis says she would like to put any funds she collects towards a new bath and wet room which is being installed at the home.

The cost of the work is currently unknown but is estimated to be several thousand pounds.

Mavis said: “I have done fundraising before and I was thinking about what else I could do to boost funds.

“I saw the skydiving in a magazine and thought ‘I could do that, I quite like flying’.

“I couldn’t wait to tell my daughter Karen. I had to call her that night.

“She told me if that’s what I wanted to do, it was fine. I am fit but I can not walk too far so I couldn’t do a sponsored walk.”

Mavis’ fundraising efforts currently stand at more than £1,000 and she is hoping to collect as many sponsorship pledges as possible before the big day.

Donations so far have ranged from £1 to £50.

Any money raised above what is needed for the home’s new wet room will be put in the resident’s comfort fund.

“People have been pretty generous,” said Mavis.

“Perhaps it’s because I am 80 and people feel sorry for me.”

The skydive will take place at Sibson Airfield, near Peterborough, on May 2.

Mavis said: “I am excited. We’ll have about half-an-hour of training beforehand.

“They do a video of the jump so I’m hoping to take it away with me and show it to everyone at Patchett Lodge.”

Patchett Lodge home manager Sue Gardener said: “Everyone thinks it is wonderful.

“We can not believe she is doing it.”

Mavis believes she will be too exhausted for any other birthday celebrations, but thinks she might be ready for a drink by the end of it.

l Anyone who would like to sponsor Mavis can pledge on sponsorship forms in Patchett Lodge on Stukeley Road and TBC Ltd on Fleet Road Industrial Estate.
