A fire damaged bingo hall is still out of action one year on from a devastating blaze - but bosses say they still plan to reopen the venue.

Spalding’s Regent Bingo suffered a serious fire in the early hours of Friday, May 14 and has not been able to open since.

The incident was sparked by an electrical fault and came just three days before it was going to be able to reopen as Covid restrictions eased.

Eric Howell, operations director for Regent owners Majestic Bingo, said it was still definitely the plan to reopen the Westlode Street venue but that the repairs were not yet complete.

Mr Howell said: “The restoration is still ongoing. We will let the customers know when we have any news.

“It’s a big job. Things have to go out to tender.

“It’s quite an old building and there’s all the problems that brings.”

Bosses have been taking regular customers on bus trips to Skegness for bingo sessions while the venue is out of action.

While trips were less common in the winter, they are returning now that the weather has improved.

Mr Howell said: “We are giving customers their bingo fix by putting on buses to Skegness.”

The fire caused extensive damage to the building - with five crews having to be called from Spalding, Bourne and Donington and residents told to keep their windows and doors shut.

Andrea Briggs, founder of the South Lincolnshire Friendship Circle, said the venue is greatly missed by many people in the area as an important social hub.

She said: “The older generation do rely on those sort of places to find someone to chat to - that was obvious at Spalding.”

The building was said to have opened as a Savoy cinema in June 1937 and was converted to a bingo club in 1970.

It had a £200,000 facelift in 2018.
