FORKLIFT driver David Bourne was left in agony and in hospital after being savagely beaten as he tried to rescue a woman who was being assaulted.

The 36-year-old suffered a badly smashed upper jaw after the incident, which happened while he was walking home from his darts match at The Lincoln Arms in Spalding on Monday night.

Police believe three men were involved in the attack, outside St Mary and St Nicolas Church.
