What started as a way to get her workmates out of an Easter cake headache has turned into something rewarding for Crowland cake maker Linda Glitherow.

Satisfied customers from as far away as Staffordshire, Sussex and Yorkshire can vouch for Linda’s “attention to detail” that has made her business, Crowland Cake Creations, an increasing must-have for weddings, birthdays and other occasions.

The business started out five years ago from Linda’s love of baking alongside her mum in the family kitchen and since become a labour of love based at her home in Foreman Way, Crowland.

Linda said: “I’ve always baked but in 2004, I did a couple of sugarcraft classes so that I could make my own wedding cake.

“Then we had an event at work in 2009 when we were let down at the last minute for a cake on Easter Monday.

“I used to bring in cakes for charity events and they asked me if I could bake one.

“After that, I started making cakes for my family, friends and friends of friends when people said I should turn it into a small business.”

Demand for Crowland Cake Creations grew three years ago when Linda decided to advertise in the town magazine and again in February 2013 when she took samples of her designs to wedding fairs.

Linda said: “I always try to learn a new design and technique so that I can create a cake that’s unique and individual to each customer.

“The majority of my business comes from personal recommendations and it’s been very, very busy now that my picture has been put on (social media site) Facebook.”

In keeping with the Guardian’s Shop Local, Eat Local, Play Local campaign, Linda relies heavily on support from customers in Crowland and sources as many ingredients as she can from the town.

Linda said: “I do find that people like to use a local business where they can and there’s one family in Crowland where I’ve just made my 11th cake for them.”
