Sunday, July 3 saw the conclusion of celebrations dedicated to the Armed Forces across South Holland.
An Armed Forces Celebration Day held at the Anglia Motel at Fleet Hargate, with very grateful thanks to proprietor Harold Payne, gave us an opportunity to say thank you to all those who have served in our Armed Forces and ran alongside events already organised by Harold Payne.
John Hayes MP opened the event and presented veterans with a unique Ministry of Defence Badge.
A buffet was provided by Harold for veterans, plus delicious afternoon cakes kindly donated by Terry Moore on behalf of Bakkavor.
The afternoon saw the Army take on the Navy with a very special ‘Ready Steady Cook’ competition compered very amusingly by Jan Whitbourn, herself a past competitor on the popular TV show.
Congratulations to Les and Janet Doy from the Royal Anglian and Lincolnshire Regiment who were declared winners by the judges who were: Majestic Bingo’s Justin Minkeh, Kristy Gee and Surjit from Hughes.
Keith and Yvonne Crawford from the Royal Naval Association were made ‘runners up’ giving everyone a good laugh. We would like to thank Majestic Bingo and Hughes Electrical who very kindly donated the prizes.
Many representatives from the local Armed Forces Associations took part in a quiz, and much fun was had by all who took part – well done to the cadets, the winners, who went home with vouchers worth £90, and the RNA came second securing £30. The competitions were the highlight of the Armed Forces event according to the survey sheets that came back.
Fortunately the weather held out and we were treated to a flypast at the end of the day by a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight, kindly arranged by Jack, who did us proud.
Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported the event, we couldn’t have done it without you.
