South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes says it is important that Britain works with Donald Trump following his election to The White House.
Speaking today (Wednesday), the MP said: “He has been elected and it is important that we work with him. The American people made their choice and the important thing for Britain now is to make sure that our interests are protected in American foreign policy. He has said some worrying things about NATO but, having said that, he knows Britain well and he likes Britain as he has said repeatedly.
“I am reasonably confident that the office (of President) will define the man – once you take on a big role, normally you are defined in part by the role.”
Mr Hayes supports Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to go to the Supreme Court to try to overturn the High Court ruling that said she must seek Parliament’s consent to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty launching official Brexit talks. The MP believes the Government already has a mandate because of the referendum result.
He says: “The people have spoken. We have very clear marching orders as a Government and as a Parliament.”
