Algarkirk nursery John Cullen Gardens is itself a tender plant in the horticultural world.

The business was only begun within the last few years, run by John Cullen and Hugh Hay Faulds (pictured right).

However, this year the pair have already achieved a silver medal at the RHS Flower Show at Cardiff and gold for their show garden at Blenheim Palace Flower Show.

A delighted John told the Spalding Guardian: “The garden we did at Blenheim was a functional front garden, mixing herbs and vegetables along with plants to feed the pollinators. We also created a pathway with chamomile and thyme edging.”

Plants with a purpose is the focus of what the nursery does, with John growing plants that are either pollinators, scented or with taste.

John is the plantsman while Hugh is responsible for the garden designs.

The business grew out of their large garden, a part-time hobby while they pursued their careers. However, after redundancies, they both re-trained in horticulture and began growing more seriously.

The men are now working towards their last show of the season, Tatton Park.
