The Grimsby to Peterborough Great Northern Line came to Surfleet in the 1850s.

It gave the little road where it stopped its name – Station Road – as well as the hotel, known as the Great Northern until the 1980s, although Surfleet station closed to passenger traffic in 1961. The hotel is now known as the Riverside Hotel.
