Long Sutton chippie batters the opposition

Good old-fashioned customer service and a pledge to produce top quality food keep customers coming back to Henry’s Fish ‘N’ Chip Shop in Long Sutton.

With nearly 50 years’ experience in the trade, Trevor Smith, who runs Henry’s alongside his son Matthew, took over the Market Place shop back in 2003.

He has witnessed many changes to the industry over the years, most notably huge price hikes in the cost of fish and potatoes, but despite all this, he is still determined to keep serving his customers the quality food the shop is renowned for.

Henry’s cooks its fare traditionally, using beef dripping, and has recently added gluten-free alternatives to its menu to cater for those with special dietary requirements.

“We offer a wide range of fish and chip shop staples,” said Trevor, “including skinless cod, haddock and rock fish as well as pies.

“Five or six years ago we started selling our own pizzas and wraps too, which have also proved very popular.

“We have options for vegetarians including veggie burgers and more recently we’ve started selling gluten-free products fried in vegetable oil.

“As well as a walk-in service, we also have a 20-seater restaurant in the shop where customers can eat in too.”

Trevor started his career in the fish and chip industry in Outwell, near Wisbech, back in 1971 and moved to Long Sutton in the early 1980s.

Today he has a team of nine staff at Henry’s and says that despite tougher times he wouldn’t change a thing, while admitting he couldn’t have done any of it without the support of his wife Linda and family.

“I can’t deny it, things have become harder for us,” he said, “some of the price increases we’ve had to endure are astronomical. People don’t realise how much it costs us, but we just keep doing our best.

“The key is taking pride in what we do. We give good, friendly customer service and produce tasty food that we would want to eat ourselves, with good portion sizes.

“I love producing food that customers compliment us on when they come back and I love meeting people in the shop and having a chat.

“Some of our customers have been coming in here since they were children themselves and now they’re grown up and have families of their own, so I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support.”
