Kirton secondary school is over-subscribed for the first time in its history

Parents are voting with their feet in recognition of the turnaround of Thomas Middlecott Academy in Kirton.

The secondary school, part of David Ross Education Trust, has received more applications than places available for the first time in its history. In total, the school received 229 applications for a place this September, against 108 places originally available and extended to 120 now available.

In addition, due to the number of pupils on roll increasing over the past year, every year group will be full in September and many year groups over-subscribed.

The increased interest in the school has been reflected by Ofsted, which improved the school’s rating from Inadequate to Requires Improvement in their most recent inspection. In their report, the inspection team recognised that significant changes had been made and the school had turned a corner due to the ambitions and vision of the leadership.

The school has also stepped up its engagement with the local community, hosting a wide-ranging programme of community events and allowing community groups to use the school. Most recently, the academy has hosted the Town Carol Concert, the District Beaver Sleep Over and numerous events with local primaries.

Principal Joanne Myhill-Johnson said: “This significant increase is a result of the tremendous hard work of the entire team at this school over the past 18 months. To be oversubscribed in September is testament to this and it really does make it all feel worthwhile.

"Students and staff now feel very proud of their school, which has led to greater stability among the teaching staff. Our teachers enjoy being here, they want to stay to support the journey we are on as they know they will be well treated and will develop professionally here.”

“We have also improved behaviour significantly and there is a recognition that the academy is stricter than it was before. This has been clearly welcomed by our students who like the routines and high expectations now in place.

"We have even had a number of students return to the school who had left because of poor behaviour previously. This is all part of our strategy to improve the school. We know that there is still much work to do, but I am confident we will continue to go from strength to strength over the coming years.”
