W Pridgeon, of Whaplode Drove, was the Amateur Skating Champion of Lincolnshire in 1917.

Mr Pridgeon’s “remarkably fine performance” at the skating matches on Cowbit Wash earned him the cup offered by the Lincolnshire Skating Association for the Mile Race, open to amateurs. The race had brought together a “strong contingent of first-class Fen skaters”, including several winners in previous championship races.

In the first mile, Pridgeon skated a mile in three minutes 52 seconds; in the final, when he “covered the course in splendid style”, he was five seconds quicker.

Pridgeon had won the amateur championship twice and was “undoubtedly the fastest amateur skater in the Fens”.
