Have your say

Donate – to foodbanks, charity shops – and make room for new Christmas presents.

Now that December is here the count down to Christmas has begun in earnest.

Perhaps all your presents are wrapped, the cards posted and the mince pies chilling in the freezer or perhaps you still have lists of things to do. However you organise Christmas, for many people this is the time of year when they think about helping others.

It doesn’t matter if you have a few days, hours or minutes to spare, kindness at Christmas will give you a lovely, comforting glow.

• Reserve a place for Christmas at Crisis

It costs £22.32 to provide three nutritious meals, health checks, housing advice and companionship for homeless people.

• Become a befriender

LCVS have many volunteering opportunities for befriending roles. This could just be for an hour a week to share a cup of tea with someone who is lonely.

• Make room for your Christmas presents...

by clearing out your unwanted clothes, DVDs and books and ask children to sort through the gently used toys they no longer play with, and donate those to charity shops, churches or put them on Freecycle

• Donate food to your local foodbank or animal shelter

There are collection bins at many locations including Morrisons’ store in Pinchbeck and Sainsbury’s store in Spalding.

• Select your favourite charity or good cause and ‘like’ or ‘follow’ them on the Internet

If used correctly Facebook can be an important tool for charities, letting all your contacts know about the great work the charity is doing.

• Offer to take an elderly friend or neighbour to do their shopping, to an appointment or to see a friend

If you have the time and are a car driver why not consider becoming a Volunteer Driver for the South Holland Voluntary Car Scheme? Drivers are required to take people for medical appointments and to visit sick relatives and care homes.

• Volunteer

LCVS have many long and short-term opportunities and there are roles suitable for everyone. Carry on the spirit of Christmas into 2017.
