News has been received in 1916 of the death of Pte Percy Elwes, son of Mrs Isaac Elwes, of Cowbit.
The soldier with the Lincolnshire Regiment had died of wounds received in battle.
A Sutton Bridge mother of three sons had mixed blessings in 1916.
One son, W Carter, had been killed in action in September, while another, B Carter, had just gone to the front in December.
However, a third son, H Carter, of Wingland, was making good progress in his Army career.
He had been made corporal, then sergeant for conspicuous bravery on the field. Awarded the Military Medal for his gallant bravery on the Somme, he had again been promoted, to Pro V Sergeant.
