How to make a festive 'kissing ball' - with Flowers 'n' Things in Spalding
The staff at the shop in Red Lion Street explain how to make this stunning seasonal decoration:
This month we’re going to show you how to make your very own kissing ball. It’s super easy - even if you’ve never dabbled in floristry before!
All you need to get started is some ribbon, foliage offcuts from the garden, mistletoe, and some oasis.
If you don’t have access to any of these bits then pop in and see us in Flowers ‘n’ Things.
First you need to carefully carve your oasis to create a spherical base using a knife.
Once you are happy your sphere is the right size for you, the next job is to wrap a length of florist ribbon around the oasis.
Create a cross shape around the sphere and be sure to leave a loop with which you can hang your kissing ball up once you’re done! Once you’ve done this, your oasis needs to be immersed in water for a few seconds to keep the foliage fresh for as long as possible.
The next job is to start adding in your greenery. Try to include a variety of different textures and shapes to interest the eye. Trim the stems of your foliage to the desired length, and don’t forget you’ll need a couple of inches of 'leaf free' stem you can gently push it into the oasis securely.
Once you’ve created a good coverage of greenery all around the sphere, it’s time to add in your mistletoe using the same method as your greenery.
Try to place your berries evenly around the sphere for maximum impact.
When you are satisfied your sphere is well covered, all you need to do is add a little bow into the base of the sphere (tying the bow around some florist wire will allow you to easily attach it) and hang it up ready to enjoy during the festive season.
