Ex-Spalding Grammar student walked to Morocco

Student Richard Simpson was ahead of schedule as he hitch-hiked from York to Morocco.

Former Spalding Grammar School pupil Richard (19) and a University of York colleague Esther Redhouse-White reached Malaga in Spain several days ahead of schedule.

Richard was taking on the 1,600-mile trek for charity Link Community Development, which worked to improve the standard of school and education for some of Africa's poorest children.

He aimed to raise £500, but a quiz night at Quadring village hall raised £335, plus £200 funding came from the Royal Mail, where Richard's mum Wendy worked.

Pictured are Richard and Esther before their trip.
