Long Sutton firemen ensure fashion show is sizzling

It really should have come as no surprise when 12 women volunteered to strut their stuff for East Elloe Lions Club’s fashion show at Sutton St James.

It wasn’t so much the opportunity to wear well-known fashion brands that was the big temptation... but the promise by Long Sutton firemen to escort the models along the catwalk, subject to operational contingencies, of course!

And Lion David Gordon revealed the fire crew were willing to parade “in full operational uniforms, braces included!”

He said: “Thursday night is drill night for the retained firefighters and Richard Hill, the fire chief, volunteered to finish up at the village hall as their contribution to this cause which affects so many of us.”

David added: “Temperatures were raised even before the arrival of the Long Sutton fire crew! The fashion show was a rip-roaring success.”

The Lions organised the show in aid of Breast Cancer Now.

The show was provided by a professional company, along with catwalk, accessories and outfits from companies such as River Island, Laura Ashley, Next, Monsoon, Miss Selfridge and Gap.

The well-known fashion brands that were modelled were available for at least 50 per cent off retail prices.

David says the volunteer models were “extremely professional” in their approach, and says the queue to purchase items took well over an hour to disperse.

He said: “Every seat was taken by the mainly female audience and the atmosphere got better and better as the evening progressed.

“Wine and juice were included in the admission fee and at times the barman was overwhelmed!

“Lion treasurer Norman Carroll was beaming from ear to ear as the money kept being handed to him.

“It was a terrific response and a fantastically successful event for this small Lions club.”

Once expenses have been deducted, the Lions will present the profit to the breast cancer charity.
