Make your own scented winter flower arrangement

By Spalding Today Columnist

The team at Flowers 'n' Things in Red Lion Street, Spalding, show you how to create a seasonal display in time for Christmas:

It won’t be too long now until December rolls around, and with it the onset of advent. So this month we’re going to show you how to create an arrangement that makes the most of seasonal fragrances and flowers to make your home smell lovely.

All you need for this one is a short vase, a block of oasis, some seasonal herbs and flowers from the garden. You can also add an advent candle to celebrate the season too.

Create your base for your arrangement.
Create your base for your arrangement.

Firstly, dunk your oasis in some water and trim it so it fits snug in your vase. You’ll be using this as the base for your arrangement, so make sure it’s nice and secure and not too low that you can’t anchor your plants into it easily.

Now it’s time to sort your foliage and flowers out. Separate your greenery from your decorative bits. Keep your berries, pine cones, cinnamon sticks etc. to the side for now as you arrange your foliage to give a beautiful, full base. Push the stems gently into the oasis to secure them. Once you’re happy with your base, you can start adding your decorative bits and bobs.

We’ve used berries, pine cones and cinnamon sticks to keep things fragrantly festive. You can use florists' wire to create a 'stem' for anything that doesn’t have a natural anchor to push into the oasis. We also added a base in the centre to safely rest our advent candle on. If you do the same, be careful to not leave the candle unattended when burning. Once you’re finished, all that’s left to do is find the perfect place to house it while you relax and enjoy the cosy winter nights!
