The news of the death of Sgt J W Clarke (right), of Holbeach, was reported in 1917.

Sgt Clarke had taken part in “severe fighting” at the front, and had previously been wounded on three occasions. His mother had already lost a husband and brother in the First World War.

One of the oldest wildfowlers in the Fens, William Pickering (left), had also died, aged 87, in Spalding.

He was described as a “picturesque figure in his drab smock” stalking wild fowl on Cowbit Wash.
