Cars from the 1980s and 1990s are hot property at the moment. If it’s a performance icon or a car nerd’s dream, chances are it will already be commanding prices well beyond your wildest dreams.

But there are still models out there that haven’t started to skyrocket yet. The smart money should be on these likely appreciating assets, and we’ve found the perfect example of the breed. A mint Honda CR-X 1.6i-16.

In period red, the CR-X still looks good. The not-so-subtle bodykit enhances its squat proportions and the idiosyncratic split rear window of this quasi-coupe hatch remains novel.

Being a Honda, the interior has shiny plastics but they will be beautifully built, and the bolstered seats in period red pinstripe look suitably retro. They even carry a fancy CR-X stitched graphic.

What really made this second-generation CR-X great was its engine. This one isn’t the fancy VTEC model, but the 1.6-litre unit still puts out 131hp and has all the enthusiasm you’d expect of a revvy 1980s Japanese 16v motor. It’ll easily keep a Peugeot 205 GTI honest.
