For many, Audi’s Q7 is an intimidatingly large SUV. Sitting one size down, the Audi Q5 provides great accommodation for five and is a fair bit easier to get in and out of multi-storey car parks.

Brand new Q5s start at over £39,000, but used examples of previous-generation cars (on sale from 2008 to 2017) start from £11,000 and are very much worth considering, especially as they retain their value very well.

Rivalling the BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Volvo XC60, the Q5 could be had with a wide range of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, making it an attractive proposition for an equally wide range of buyers. Our recommended Q5 model would be the 2.0-litre diesel as it delivers the best combination of performance and running costs affordability. For petrol fans, a 2009 specimen of a well looked-after 2.0-litre TFSI will cost about £17,000.

In 2012 the Q5 received a styling refresh and a small increase in the power of its engines. Prices for facelifted 2.0-litre diesel models start at about £15,500.

The SE-spec Q5 is the entry-level trim option, but it’s nevertheless our recommended choice because it includes just about everything you might need, including alloy wheels, climate control, parking sensors and an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch screen and a rotary controller between the seats.

The S line or S line Plus are more of a personal choice as the bigger alloy wheels these cars are fitted with contribute to making the ride quite firm. Try before you buy is a good phrase to bear in mind here.

All five passengers will be happy with the amount of head and leg room on offer. Some Q5s were optioned with a sliding rear seat, allowing owners to expand either rear leg room or space in the boot.

If you’re looking for 2.0-litre diesel Q5s, check the mileage against the need to renew the cambelt every five years or 140,000 miles. That job should cost in the region of £600, so this amount needs to be factored into the overall cost of the car you’re looking at. You should also check the smooth, delay-free operation of the transmission, whether it’s manual or dual-clutch S tronic automatic, as repairs are expensive. Make sure that all the official Q5 factory recalls have been carried out too.
