Once a month, Welland Yacht Club is the home for a group of enthusiasts who turn pieces of plastic into collectors’ items.

Fenland and Spalding Model Club is keeping alive memories of parents giving their children Airfix, Hornby and Trumpeter model kits as birthday presents.

The club welcomes people of all ages who can display their models for fun or enter a bi-monthly competition where items made range from military aircraft to sports cars.

A club spokesman said: “Our members, both adult and junior, all model to different standards.

“Some are passionate about accuracy and detail, but others are happy with a Spitfire that has stayed together after some glue and a splash of paint.

“Every club member is always more than happy to offer advice and support to help improve your modelling and throughout the year, we have practical demonstrations of the various hidden arts of modelling.”

The highlight of the club’s year is the annual Wings and Things model show which is taking place this year at Spalding High School, Matmore Gate, on September 21 between 10am and 4pm.

There will be displays and trade stands from various groups, along with a chance to make your own Airfix model.
