SPALDING RFC: Town off to winning start in Norfolk

WEST NORFOLK RFC 1st 24 SPALDING RFC 1st 53: TOWN got their new campaign up and running on Saturday with a comfortable victory in their one and only pre-season fixture.

In a match played in four quarters of 20 minutes, both sides had hefty 25-man squads to choose from – with substitutions done on a roll on, roll off basis.

Spalding led in three of the four quarters of the match, having trailed early on.

Among those to score were Kev Childs, who managed to run in two tries and skipper Harry Sharman, who notched from a driving maul.

Teenage debutant Harry Winch also marked his debut with a try from the back of a ruck, while Adam McHugh broke the line for a good score and Alex Coates drove over the line to get himself on the scoresheet.

A number of new young players were given the opportunity to show their skills and strengths and the majority were able to live up to the occasion, with Cameron Lithgow showing his skills in the centre.

Although seasoned campaigners like Peter Shakespeare, Harry Brown, Rob Lucas, Childs and Sharman also featured, there was a very youthful feel to the side – which bodes well for the future.

But a number of the more experienced players are expected to return to the fold ahead of the big kick off this weekend.

Spalding begin their competitive fixtures with an NLD Shield clash at Lincoln this Saturday (3pm).
