Spalding RFC v Leighton Buzzard (Saturday, 3pm): CONFIDENT Spalding RFC are looking to register their first win of the new Midlands One East season this weekend.
Town were left feeling hard done by after their 29-15 loss at Ilkeston last Saturday – but skipper Harry Sharman is aiming for at least four points at their first Memorial Field clash of the season.
Both Spalding and Leighton Buzzard made losing starts to last season, but Sharman’s men were comfortable winners the last time the duo met. And Sharman, who expects to be out for at least three more weeks with a hamstring problem, is hoping for the same again.
He said: “There were some brilliant performances last week and we were really unlucky to lose. I was very disappointed as I thought we were the better side.
“Hopefully we can produce the same again against Buzzard, it’s certainly a winnable fixture.”
Town’s fans can expect to see a few fresh faces this weekend. Perhaps the most intriguing of the new additions is 6ft 8in second row forward Josh McNally, who has joined from the RAF.
Hooker Chris Crane should also make his bow after impressing over the summer.
Ryan Chappell is available too, but Tom Duerden (leg) is out. Club legends Ben Hausermann and Andrew Branton are also back in the fold and pushing for a start.
• Town will be showing England’s opening World Cup game against Argentina from 9.30am at their clubhouse on Saturday.
