Skipper Harry Sharman was delighted with the performance of his side’s young guns as Spalding Rugby Club won 10-5 at Peterborough in a pre-season friendly on Thursday.
The game, Spalding’s only friendly ahead of the Midlands One East opener at home to Belgrave on September 6, was played over four 20-minute periods and Spalding took a squad of around 30 to face their local rivals.
Callum Thompson scored their opening try during the second period but the hosts battled back to level.
Josh Broome then went over to secure a confidence-boosting victory for Spalding.
Skipper Sharman said: “We played well and the pleasing thing was the performances of the youngsters.
“We had a lot of 17 and 18-year-olds in the team and many of them did as well as the senior players.
“You can’t always tell in training whether youngsters will be able to step up to the plate in matches but the young lads did us proud.”
