SPALDING RFC: Quartet read to roll as Town ring changes

Spalding RFC v Matlock RFC (Saturday, 2.15pm): HARRY Sharman is ready to ring the changes in a bid to ignite Town’s survival bid.

Spalding have lost their last five Midlands One East fixtures, a run that has seen them slump into the bottom two.

Despite delivering an encouraging performance in defeat at Bedford Athletic last Saturday, Town skipper Sharman is likely to hand starts to Mike Beeken, Richie Craig, Harry Brown and Kev Childs as travel-shy Matlock visit the Memorial Field.

And despite their perilous plight at the foot of the standings, the talismanic skipper insists that he isn’t panicking over the prospect of relegation.

“It’s getting tight at the bottom, which is worrying,” said Sharman. “But there’s no panic.

“I do think that it’s time to make changes. The lads coming in are of a good quality, so it’s not a risk.

“Matlock don’t travel well, but we need to rediscover that winning feeling. Some of the lads admitted that it almost felt strange being ahead at Bedford.

“We’ve traditionally done well at home against the bigger sides and Matlock are certainly strong opposition.”

The stats back up Sharman’s view, with sixth-placed Matlock currently 19 points ahead of Town. But they’ve won just twice away this season.
