RUGBY: Town are told to up their game

Respected Spalding RFC coach Niall Thompson has issued a battlecry ahead of Saturday’s crunch derby at Peterborough (2.15pm).

Town go into the clash rock bottom of Midlands One East with just one win from their opening ten.

But their city hosts are only four points better off – and Thompson is confident there is enough ability at the Memorial Field to stave off relegation.

He said: “Without a doubt, this is a transitional period for the club. We’ve blooded a lot of young lads and, at times, we’ve been tactically naive.

“We’ve come a long way as a club and are punching above our weight for a town of this size. We want to stay in this league and have players good enough to do so.

“But there’s been no consistency in our team selection and performances. Some of the guys have to look at themselves and realise they need to be more committed.”
