RUGBY: Humbling home defeat for Town

SPALDING RFC 5 TOWCESTRIANS 67: Town failed to build on their first Midlands One East win of the season as they were handed another hefty defeat on Saturday.

Although they were able to keep the score to a respectable level for much of the Memorial Field clash, Towcestrians ran away with a very convincing win in the last 15 minutes.

Although Spalding made a solid start against the wind, a mistake allowed the visitors’ scrum half to collect a loose ball and score (unconverted) in the corner on 12 minutes.

Town then gave the ball away again from a long throw and swift passing through Towcestrians’ three quarter line set up another score, which was easily converted.

Spalding then enjoyed their best spell of the game, as they won several penalties. The presurre resulted in a try, with Dave Hankinson chipping through for Adam McHugh to touch down after a favourable bounce.

Sadly, that was as good as it got for the hosts and their sizeable support. Another try put the away side 17-5 up at the interval, and within ten minutes of the second period that lead was extended to 31-5.

For a spell, Spalding played in Towcestrians’ 22, but they couldn’t cut the deficit despite going close on numerous occasions. As if to rub salt into Town’s wounds, six further away tries gave the scoreline a very one-sided look at the final whistle.

Town: Harry Sharman (captain), Peter Waudby, Jimmy Rowlands ,Sam Cooke, Mark Haighton, Alex Coates, Tom Duerden, Harry Brown, Ben Williams, Dave Hankinson, Dan Adams, Ryan Chappell, Ben Williamson, Harry Harrison, Rob Lucas, Ollie Lake, Adam McHugh and Harry Winch.
