Ambitious Spalding RFC get their pre-season schedule under way this week as they bid to bounce back from last year’s relegation.
As we went to press they were hoping to arrange a clash with either Sleaford or Oakham, before they play host to old foes Peterborough RFC on Tuesday (7pm).
There will be a number of new faces on show. Ian and Shaun Bishop have arrived from Sleaford, while young open side Josh Finch and tall centre Dan Cooper have also signed on.
Bourne duo Matt Newman and James West and Deeping’s Lance Charity are also among those to head to the Memorial Field – and coach Niall Thomson is positive about the season ahead.
He said: “We’ve had a pretty good pre-season, although Boston crying off is a bit disappointing.
“We’ll be looking to play expansive and dynamic rugby this season and we’ve challenged the lads to go unbeaten throughout the league season.
“I’d hope that we’ll be pretty comfortable in our new league. But, as always is the case with rugby at this level, it’ll be all about how we perform away from home.
“There will be some tough games, but we’ve got a talented young squad.”
After Tuesday’s friendly, Town make the trip to Ashbourne in the NLD Shield on Saturday week (3pm).
They will then host Norwich RFC on Saturday, September 7 as part of the club’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
The Midlands Two East (North) campaign then begins at Bakewell on September 14.
On the same day Town’s second string host Peterborough 2nd.
