SPALDING RFC 2nd 64 OAKHAM 31: AFTER the disappointment of seeing their first game of the season called off, Town made a winning start to the new campaign on Saturday.
Lightning looked set to strike twice too, as Spalding’s original opponents also cried off at the 11th hour this week.
Fortunately, a depleted Oakham team were kind enough to step in and make the journey to Memorial Field – and the duo served up 95 points between them.
With many fresh faces, Town started off brightly and scored early on from a good lineout and excellent forward play.
However, Spalding then took their foot off the gas and allowed Oakham to take control of the game and they responded with two tries.
Hosts Town regrouped though, and the scores were level at half time.
The second half was a different affair, with Spalding’s forwards and backs starting to unite.
With some great pack work the ball started coming out to the backs, who in turn produced some fantastic running play which resulted in three quick tries for the home team.
Debutants Whitby at full back and Hugh were on-song, while Andy Lal managed to score tries for both sides whilst helping Oakham out in the first half. The Town team played well – and with some regular attendance at training in the coming weeks, the future looks bright for the side.
