Inspirational captain Harry Sharman could return to the squad as leaders Spalding RFC take on Ashbourne in their last match before the Christmas break on Saturday.

Sharman will undergo a late fitness test before the Memorial Field clash against the fourth-placed team, but if he is passed fit he may only start on the bench.

Coach Niall Thomson said: “It’s a big loss for us when he’s out.

“It may be after Christmas before he returns, but if he does play a part on Saturday it will be a big boost.”

Saturday’s opponents did beat a much-depleted Spalding in a pre-season Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire Shield game, but Town will be a different proposition this time around.

“We have (scrum half) Rob Lucas back after work commitments, Ben Williams will continue to do a job for us when called upon and we have a number of good options,” added Thomson.

“All things being well we will sit at the top of the table come 4pm Saturday with a league record of having won eleven out of eleven.”

The Midlands Two East (North) fixture kicks off at 2.15pm.
