Niall Thomson reckons that Saturday’s trip to title rivals Oakham (2.15pm) is a ‘season-defining’ match for Midlands Two East (North) leaders Spalding RFC.

Table-toppers Town go into the clash seven points clear of their second-placed hosts, having won all eight of their league games so far this term.

Another victory could see them potentially 12 points ahead come Saturday night – and Spalding coach Thomson feels that will prove decisive in the title race.

He said: “It’s a big one, probably the defining game in our season.

“If we can go there and win we’ll have a handy lead.

“I’m very confident that we’ll win, providing we go there with the right attitude and play at the right tempo.

“They’ve got a big pack and will be organised. But we could have scored 100 points in our last game.

“If we play the same again, we will win. That’s not arrogant, it’s just confidence.”

Spalding must do without unavailable duo Pete Waudby and Alex Ioannou. But Ryan Chappell, Andy Hoyles and Tom Duerden are all fit to return after missing last Saturday’s 66-17 victory over Nottingham Casuals.
