RUGBY: Confident Town eye perfect end to 2012

Have your say

Red-hot Spalding RFC complete their 2012 fixtures with a grudge match at fierce rivals Market Rasen and Louth on Saturday (2.15pm).

Having won three on the bounce, another victory for Town would represent their best run of form since being promoted to Midlands One East over two years ago.

Coach Niall Thomson has been hugely impressed with the team’s response to losing the first eight games of the season – and has challenged Spalding to end the year in style.

Thomson said: “To go into this game above them is a massive confidence boost to the lads. We looked dead and buried a few weeks ago. But this team is mentally tougher now and we’re prepared to do the nitty gritty things.

“You can see partnerships growing all over the field too. Against Newark on Saturday it really should have been more comfortable. But in a way it was great to see the team roll their sleeves up and defend a lead in the closing minutes.

“We know Rasen will have a great forward pack, but they’ve really been struggling lately. If we can nulify that, we may end the year in a better position than we could have dared imagine a month ago.”

Spalding have no new selection problems.
