TULIPS: Wormall rejects return
MARTIN Wormall has snubbed the chance to return to Spalding United and spearhead their bid for survival.
The Grantham Town hot-shot, who fired ten goals for the Tulips under Alan Biley last season, was offered a deal by caretaker boss Richard Scott earlier this week.
Scott had hoped to pair Wormall with leading scorer Simon Mowbray in an impressive-looking front two, but it now appears he will take a break from football for the remainder of the season.
The Spalding Guardian understands that Wormall initially sounded out the Tulips about a return, only to have a change of heart as negotiations progressed.
Spalding supremo Scott has added to his ever-improving squad this week though, with right back David Abe arriving from Midland Football Combination Premier Division side Pelsall Villa.
He will replace the suspended Matty Evans for Saturday's tough trip to promotion-chasing bogey side Sheffield FC (3pm).
Nobody hates travelling to the home of the world's oldest football club more than the Tulips, who have suffered successive 7-0 beatings at the Bright Finance Stadium.
And Scott has warned his side that another Sheffield spanking could be on the cards if their attitude isn't right in Yorkshire.
The Tulips, who are without an away win all season, were much improved in last weekend's shock 1-0 win over Belper Town - but they slumped to a horrific 4-0 loss at relegation rivals Lincoln United in their last game on the road.
He said: "We were great against Belper and I picked up a really positive vibe from the lads.
"If they take that attitude to Sheffield then we are more than capable of taking something.
"But if the showing against Lincoln is repeated, it could easily be another 7-0 defeat.
"Personally, I go there confident and believing that we can win."
Despite being five points from UniBond League First Division South safety, Scott feels Spalding have never had it so good selection-wise.
The caretaker boss has the luxury of leaving players out of his match-day squad now - and has even let reserve keeper Richard Roberts go out on loan to Peterborough Northern Star.
But with an average age of around 20, the talent at the Tulips' disposal is a litte raw at step four of the Non-League ladder.
Scott added: "Since I've been here as a player and manager we've always been scrambling for players.
"Now we have a healthy squad and competition for places, although the average age is about 20.
"The key now is to instil a bit more confidence into the younger lads - and the only way that'll happen is if we win games."Fifth-placed hosts Sheffield are just a point off the top spot and are incredibly strong at home.
They have lost just one of their ten games in their own back yard, winning eight.
But their recent form has been patchy, having won just two of their last six.
Spalding will take heart from Sheffield's recent loss at Quorn, who are their main relegation rivals.
And the Tulips will have half an eye on the Leicestershire side's result this weekend too, as they make the trip to fellow strugglers Lincoln United on Saturday for a crunch relegation clash.
Tuesday night's UniBond League results: Market Drayton Town 7 Willenhall Town 1; Stamford 3 Quorn 1.
