TULIPS: Wonderful Webb secures progress

SPALDING UTD 1 (Webb 46) GOOLE AFC 0

MARK Webb's wonder strike banked the Tulips a 1,500 FA Cup windfall on Saturday.

Spalding survived a nail-biting 10 minutes of added time at the end before booking a home tie with Lincolnshire rivals Brigg Town in the next round.

It's a first win of the season for Richard Scott's new-look charges too - and the player/boss hailed the result.

Scott said: "To beat a side that finished way above us last season shows how far we have come.

"It was a battling display and will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. The Brigg tie is one we can win too, so we'll look forward to that."

Webb's goal, which came in the first minute of the second half at the Sir Halley Stewart Plaing Field, was a real peach, writes Ray Tucker.

Breaking from kick-off Tony Onokah collected and slipped the ball through for Webb to chase. He took control on the edge of the 18 yard area and picked his spot to beat the advancing Craig Parry with a precision finish.

As important and classy as the goal was, the Tulips were also thankful for the bravery of keeper Martyn Margarson who took the full force of a Vil Powell challenge a yard from his goal.

The Tulips were near to taking an 11th minute lead but Andy White's neat lob clipped the top of the bar.

Goole hit back as Andrew Jackson's 35-yard effort zipped past a post and Simon Spencer lobbed wide of the target.

The second half continued at the same hectic pace but the Tulips showed composure after "Webby" had broken the deadlock.

Onokah brought an excellent save from Parry while skipper Matty Evans, once again strong in the centre of midfield, popped one over the Goole bar.

Despite a strong late challenge the nearest Goole went to levelling the scores was when Phil Lindley's header from a Scott Ellis cross clipped the woodwork.

Defensive duo Ross Miller and Gary Pawson excelled throughout.

Tulips: Margarson, Scott, Pugh, Miller, Pawson, White, Evans, Cox, Tidswell, Onokah, Webb (Westwood). Unused: Penny, Overton, de Oliveira.

Wednesday - Glapwell v Tulips (7.45pm); Saturday - Tulips v Newcastle Town (3pm).
