TULIPS: Welsh back in town
FORMER Tulips boss Steve Welsh is due to return to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Tuesday as caretaker- manager of Boston United.
The Scot was put in charge of the Pilgrims following Tuesday's departure of manager Tommy Taylor.
And Welsh's third game at the helm should be a UniBond Challenge Cup third round tie on Tuesday (7.45pm).
There is some doubt as the Pilgrims play at FC United of Manchester on Sunday in the FA Trophy and if a replay is required, then the match at Spalding would be postponed.
Tulips boss Alan Biley is hoping the match will go ahead on Tuesday and is rubbing his hands at the prospect of a big gate.
Although the Pilgrims' form saw them slip into the UniBond League Premier Division relegation zone last weekend, they enjoy a strong, loyal following and many fans will make the short trip along the A16.
He said: "It's an interesting time to be playing them.
"We might be playing a totally different side come Tuesday in terms of outlook and renewed vigour."
Welsh, a hugely experienced ex-pro who captained Peterborough United, managed the Tulips between February and October 2005.
Although not enjoying a particularly successful time, he was and still is held in high regard at the club. He resigned to take up a full-time coaching role with Boston, who were still in the Football League at that point.
Biley, who was Welsh's successor for his first spell with the club, said: "Steve is one of the good guys.
"I know all the hard work he does with Boston United and it's good to know from their point of view that they have someone like him to step into the breach."
Biley was planning to see the Pilgrims in action against Frickley Athletic last night, Welsh's first game in charge.
"Steve will come in and have his own ideas and will certainly go about it differently to Tommy Taylor," said the Tulips boss.
He admitted attraction to the Boston manager's job, but will not be applying for it.
He said: "I think any manager would be interested unless they are at a club comfortably higher.
"Outside the Conference, there are probably only half a dozen clubs people would relish managing and Boston are one of them.
"I won't be applying because I want to continue the work I have done over the last nine months at Spalding and, in any case, I think there would be several managers ahead of me."
Meanwhile, it appeared yesterday that he was losing the race to sign Gresley Rovers defender Miles Chamberlain. After also being chased by Grantham Town and Brigg, the player looked to be heading to Stamford.
The Tulips go to AFC Goole on Saturday in the league.
