TULIPS: We deserved so much better - Scott
GOOLE AFC 4 (Allott 27, 42 & 79, Ellis 84) SPALDING UNITED 1 (Onokah 34)
WASTEFUL Spalding paid the price for some shocking finishing on Tuesday night.
The Tulips spurned a host of excellent chances and were made to pay by a Goole side they had recently knocked out of the FA Cup.
Player/boss Richard Scott - whose side are still searching for a first Evo-Stik League First Division South win of the season - felt Spalding deserved much, much more.
He said: "I couldn't believe that we were trailing at half time.
"We played some of our best football of the season and should have put the game to bed inside 30 minutes.
"Looking at the table, we're a few points off where we deserve to be right now.
"But I'm not overly worried, we're so much better off than we were at this stage last season."
Along with the poor performance in front of goal, flashes of kamikaze defending contributed to a disappointing night for the Tulips.
Their problems began early on, with David de Oliveira blazing the ball high over the bar from 18 yards with the goal gaping.
Five minutes later skipper Matty Evans carved out an opening for Mark Webb, but somehow he hooked the ball over when only a yard or so from the target.
Striker Tony Onokah then lashed the ball into the net - only to see his effort chalked off for a handball by Webb.
Six minutes later Goole were ahead with Gavin Allott converting the first of a hat-trick from close in.
After his earlier disappointment Onokah got his reward on 34 minutes, getting the crucial final touch in a goalmouth melee. But within minutes the towering striker completely fluffed his lines with the goal at his mercy.
The chances kept coming, as an excellent four-man Spalding move ended with keeper Craig Parry denying George Cox with a full-stretch save.
But three minutes later the ever dangerous Allott was allowed to turn and shoot from the edge of the box to restore the home lead.
It was all downhill for the Tulips from there, as he completed a treble in the 77th minute, again taking advantage of some ineffective defending.
The scoring was complete six minutes from time, Allott unselfishly slipping the ball through a lost defence for Scott Ellis to notch.
Next up for Scott's side is a tricky home FA Cup clash with league Brigg Town - who hadn't conceded a league goal ahead of last night's trip to Glapwell.
