TULIPS UPDATE: No appointment expected by weekend
SPALDING United do not expect to have a new manager in place by the weekend.
Nearly a week after Alan Biley's surprise resignation, the Tulips are no closer to filling the ample void left by the former Everton and Portsmouth striker.
The Spalding Guardian understands that a number of parties have expressed an interest in the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field hot-seat, but chairman Chris Toynton is yet to interview any of the candidates.
Alex Irvine is no longer in the frame for the job, with any plans to resurrect his appointment seemingly dead in the water.
The former Tulips player, caretaker manager and acting chairman agreed to take over in the wake of Biley's departure.
But it has emerged that ex-Boston Town midfielder Nathan Collins, who was due to be Irvine's assistant, got cold feet over the move.
In the absence of a manager, club captain Stuart Goosey took charge of Spalding's opening pre-season training session on Tuesday night.
He put the 15 players in attendance through their paces, and is expected to do so until a new boss is named.
Whoever is appointed will be the 11th different Spalding supremo in the last ten years.
Along with Biley's three stints in the role and Irvine's previous spell, Alan Day, Nick Andersen, Simon Stewart, Dick Creasey, Steve Charles, Steve Welsh, Andy Stanhope (caretaker), Phil Hubbard and Domenico Genovese have passed through the revolving Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field door.
With stability the key at non-league level, there is a danger that the position has become something of a poisoned chalice.
Indeed, since Shaun Keeble took over at rivals Holbeach United in 2004, the Spalding faithful have endured seven changes at the top.
Hubbard's 19-month rein was the longest in that time, with Biley's 14-month stay a close second.
