TULIPS: Out to spring a surprise in replay
SPALDING UTD 0 NORTH FERRIBY UTD 0
ALAN Biley believes his squad can surprise North Ferriby United and win tonight's FA Carlsberg Trophy replay.
The Tulips earned another chance at getting into the second qualifying round in an entertaining goalless draw on Saturday.
Back to full strength, they matched their UnbiBond League Premier Division opponents throughout a pulsating encounter.
Biley said: "Hopefully we can surprise them tonight.
"We go up there knowing they are beatable.
"You probably get the chance to beat a side like that one in five times. It's now one in four."
Biley gave his backing to striker Ricky Miller, who displayed some petulance after being substituted to save him from a second booking.
He said: "North Ferriby were a strong-tackling side and some of it was fairly ruthless. Ricky was hatcheted down several times and reacted very, very well.
"Later he disagreed with the ref on a decision and was booked. He was still arguing and was in danger of being sent off so I brought him off.
"He wasn't happy, but I wouldn't expect anyone being substituted to be happy.
"He apologised unreservedly afterwards.
"He's a bit like Rooney in that you don't want to take that passion out of his game. It's how you manage it that's important."
Saturday's match had its fair share of thrills and goalmouth action.
Both sides had "goals" disallowed for offside – although Martin Wormall's effort for the Tulips appeared to be subject of a harsh decision.
Minutes later an upright denied the Tulips. A fine passing sequence down the left ended with Nicky Young's super shot parried by keeper Steve Wilson. The ball was not fully cleared and Paul Tocco's stinging shot from 18 yards clipped the foot of a post.
The Tulips were enjoying themselves at this stage but North Ferriby always threatened on swift breaks and former Scunthorpe United and Swansea player Steve Torpey missed a good opportunity with the goal at his mercy.
Play continually moved from end to end and Luke Kennedy's header from Young's cross was only inches over the bar.
On 40 minutes the referee's whistle had already blown for offside when Torpey knocked the ball into the Tulips' net.
But when Wormall nipped through the visiting defence moments later and cleverly chipped the advancing Wilson, the offside decision was far more marginal.
In the second half, Andy Stanhope and Wormall had shots whistle just wide of the target, while keeper McShane saved low down to deny Andy Jackson.
Back at the other end Kennedy's free kick was headed just over the bar by Nicky Hurst.
When Ferriby attacked again man-of-the-match Steve Julian produced an excellent saving header to keep out Larvin's cross-shot.
And seven minutes from time McShane produced the save of the game, smothering Torpey's close range effort.
Tulips: McShane, Holyoak (Bowater 48mins), Allen, Kennedy, Julian, Hurst, Stanhope, Miller (Ward 80mins), Young (Moore 54mins), Wormall, Tocco. Subs not used: Carey, Roberts.
