TULIPS: Emery apologises for horror show
Thursday, 9am -TULIPS keeper Michael Emery has apologised for his horror show last weekend.
Emery, who has been one of Spalding's better performers for much of the season, was at fault for all five goals as Mickleover Sports eased to victory at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.
The ex-St Albans stopper claims he wasn't mentally right to play following the death of Tulips legend Keith Alexander - but insists he will return better than ever after taking a short break from UniBond League action.
He said: "I just want to apologise to the fans who came to watch the game on Saturday, and to the manager, coaching staff and the rest of the team.
"My performance wasn't good enough and I let everybody down including myself.
"I've had a really tough week with my dad being really ill recently and Keith Alexander, who has had a massive impact on me, passing away.
"I've been having a really good season but it was just one of those days where everything seemed to go wrong.
"I know that one bad game doesn't make me a bad keeper and I've just got to put it behind me, bounce back and show everyone how good I am."
Emery will be rested for Saturday's trip to Witton Albion and will miss Tuesday's visit of Brigg Town because of a one-match ban.
But he is adamant that he will play his part in helping the Tulips stave off relegation and thanked player/boss Richard Scott for the way he has handled his delicate situation.
The keeper added: "Scotty has been really supportive and has given me the chance to have the week off and get prepared for the following Saturday.
"I just want to get back playing at my best and help Spalding stay up.
"I hope the fans get behind not only myself but the whole team, as we believe we will stay up."
There were also words of encouragement for his understudy Max Flintoft, who has looked assured since stepping up from the Tulips' Academy team.
Emery said: "I would like to congratulate Max, who has done a great job in the last three games when called upon. But hopefully I can regain my position."
